Jump At That 10-Year Warranty — And Any Extended Offers, Too

The roof is one of those parts of your home that you can't ignore as you deal with juggling costs. If something goes wrong with the roof, the problems can cascade into other parts of the house—sometimes literally. But because the roof can cost so much, you want to be sure you're getting something that will last. A good roofing company will offer a good warranty or guarantee on the roof because that shows the company's confidence in its work. If the company offers an extended warranty, take note because that's something that could help you if the roof suddenly has a problem right after the original guarantee expires.

Why Would a Company Offer Less Than 10 Years?

Roof warranties typically don't exceed 10 years in their basic forms. You can find extended warranties that take over once the original guarantee has expired. When you look at roofing companies and figure out who you want to have working on your home, take a good look at the length of the guarantee. If you see anything less than 10 years, ask yourself why the company is reluctant to guarantee its work after only a few years.

Compare Extended Warranty Costs With Repair Costs Over 10 Years

Extended warranties can be hit or miss, but in the case of roofs, you may want to look into these. Roofs need to last as long as possible, not only for protective reasons, but also because you spent a ton of money on the roof and need to get as much value out of it as possible. An extended warranty may cost very little compared to what roof work might be. Be clear about whether the extended warranty has any limits on it, or if it's a straight continuation of all of the same coverage as the original warranty/guarantee.

Make Sure You Know What the Guarantee Covers

It is very easy to assume that you know what the guarantee will cover, which means it's very easy to assume it will cover something it doesn't. Always verify what the warranty will cover over the term. For example, will the guarantee cover damage from hail or wind? For an asphalt-shingle roof, for example, you'd likely never see a warranty against hail damage as that's something the roofing company can't control. Yet it's not unusual for people to still see if there is any coverage. Warranties and guarantees should cover issues like poor installation, material quality, and corrosion or rot resistance depending on claims made about the materials. In other words, if the roofing company promises good corrosion resistance, and you find parts of the roof corroding a year after installation, that should be covered.

Roofing companies don't offer warranties and guarantees lightly. If you see a warranty for a term like 10 years, grab it, and pay close attention to offers for extended warranties. The cost you pay now could save you a lot of money later on.

About Me

Roofs: A Secure and Stable Lid When you have something you like inside a jar, you probably put a lid on it — right? In a way, you can think of your house in the same manner. You like and value the items inside, along with the inside of the house itself. So, it only makes sense that you would protect the interior of your home with a lid. That lid is your roof. Keep that perspective in mind as you read this blog. Learning more about roofing will feel more interesting if you remember what a roof does: it protects the inside of the home and the people who live in it.
