When Is A Cedar Wood Roof A Good Choice?

Cedar roofs were once all the rage. Today, however, you don't see a lot of cedar roofs. Most are metal or asphalt shingles — and in some areas, tile. This does not, however, mean that you cannot get a cedar wood roof. There are still companies that make cedar shakes, and a lot of roofing companies will install them upon request. So, when is a cedar shake roof a good choice? Take a look.

Your home already has a cedar shake roof.

Say you have a cedar shake roof already. It has begun to break down and leak now, but you got a lot of good years out of it up until this point. In this case, getting it replaced with another cedar roof makes sense. It will be easy for your roofer to determine how to lay out the cedar roof since there is one there for them to reference. And you won't have an adjustment period since you're already used to living with a cedar roof.

You value biodegradable materials.

With all of the waste that's created by home construction these days, many homeowners are opting for more sustainable materials. If you want a material that will break down completely when you're done with it, then cedar roofing is a clear choice. Cedar roofing is just wood, and like any other wood, it will break down in a landfill within a few years. You don't have to worry about it leeching anything dangerous into the soil, and you don't have to juggle the hassle of recycling, either.

You want a natural look.

If you live in the country and want a more cabin-like or cottage-like vibe for your home, then cedar shakes can be a good choice. They coordinate very nicely with wood siding, and they look in place on most rustic buildings. There are other roofing materials, such as some specialty shingles and metal panels, that are made to look like wood. However, you can usually tell from close up that they're not real wood. This won't be an issue with cedar roofing since it's as real as can be.

Cedar roofing is not for everyone. It's not quite as durable as shingles, and it does start to look weathered over the years. However, there are definitely times when cedar roofing is a good choice for homeowners, and the situations above are good examples of that.

About Me

Roofs: A Secure and Stable Lid When you have something you like inside a jar, you probably put a lid on it — right? In a way, you can think of your house in the same manner. You like and value the items inside, along with the inside of the house itself. So, it only makes sense that you would protect the interior of your home with a lid. That lid is your roof. Keep that perspective in mind as you read this blog. Learning more about roofing will feel more interesting if you remember what a roof does: it protects the inside of the home and the people who live in it.
