If you've noticed shingles lifting on your roof when the wind is strong, call a roofing contractor to check your roof. Shingles are usually attached at the top and bottom, but the adhesive on the bottom can wear off and allow the shingles to lift up in the wind. If the wind is strong enough, the shingles can get ripped off. You'll want to get roof repairs done before that happens. Here are some repairs your roofing contractor might need to make.
Check Under The Shingles For Water Damage
If the shingles stay lifted during a storm, rain might be driven underneath and get the deck wet. This depends on the condition of the underlayment. The underlayment keeps rain from getting on the plywood deck, but only if it's still in good shape and not ripped or deteriorated. If the underlayment is bad, the roofing contractor may tear it off in the area of loose shingles so the deck can be examined. If the deck feels soft when pressed on, it's probably due to rot from water damage. If water damage is found, the deck needs to be replaced in that area so the roof is solid and strong.
Put On New Underlayment
The underlayment used for an asphalt shingle roof usually has a peel-and-stick backing. The roofing contractor can cut a patch to cover the new plywood so the roof continues to be protected from rain. Once the new deck and underlayment are down, the roofing contractor can decide whether to replace or repair the loose shingles.
Replace Loose Shingles
Since the shingles have to come off to work on the deck and underlayment, the roofing contractor may replace them with new ones. This is an easy repair since the new shingles can be slid under the shingles in the row above them and secured with nails. The bottoms of new shingles have a strip of adhesive that will warm up in the sun and bond the shingles to the roof. If the deck and underlayment don't need to be replaced, the loose shingles may not need to come off. As long as they are still secured by nails at the top, the roofer may adhere the bottom with adhesive so the lifting stops.
Check The Rest Of The Roof
While the roofing contractor is on the roof, it's a good time for them to check the rest of the shingles, boots, and flashing for damage that needs repairs. If the adhesive is worn out in one area of your roof, it may be worn out in other areas too. The roofer can then make all the repairs needed so your roof is secure and ready for storms.
